Finding Peace in the Midst of Anxiety

Writer: Freddy ValcarcelFreddy Valcarcel

Life often feels like sailing on a vast ocean. Some days, the waters are calm, and the sun is shining. Other times, dark clouds gather, the wind howls, and waves crash over us. Anxiety is much like a stormy sea—unpredictable, overwhelming, and, at times, seemingly endless. But as believers, we have an anchor that holds us firm: Jesus Christ.

Here are three key truths to help us navigate the stormy seas of anxiety and practical ways to apply them to our lives.

1. Recognize That Storms Will Come

Jesus never promised a life free from difficulties. In fact, He said: “I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world” (John 16:33, NLT)

Like the disciples who found themselves in a sudden storm on the Sea of Galilee (Mark 4:35-41), we, too, face unexpected trials that shake us. Anxiety is not a sign of weak faith but a reality of living in a broken world. Recognizing that storms are part of the journey helps us prepare for them rather than fear them.

Application: Prepare your heart beforehand instead of being surprised when anxiety strikes. Develop a daily prayer and Scripture reading habit so that you’re already anchored in God’s truth when the storms come. Keep a journal of God’s past faithfulness to remind yourself that He has brought you through before and will do so again.

2. Keep Your Eyes on Jesus, Not the Waves

When Peter walked on water, he did something miraculous—but the moment he took his eyes off Jesus and focused on the storm, he began to sink (Matthew 14:30). Anxiety works the same way. When we fixate on our fears, they consume us. But when we fix our eyes on Christ, we find peace.

“You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you”! (Isaiah 26:3, NLT)

Application: The next time you feel anxiety creeping in, stop and shift your focus. Try a “30-second reset”: Close your eyes, take a deep breath, and say a short prayer: “Jesus, I trust You.” Then, intentionally replace anxious thoughts with God’s promises—write down or memorize verses that remind you of His peace and faithfulness.

3. Trust That Jesus Is in the Boat with You

In Mark 4, when the disciples panicked in the storm, Jesus was right there with them. He rebuked the wind and waves, bringing instant peace. Anxiety makes us feel alone, but the truth is Jesus is always with us in the storm.

“Do not be afraid, for I am with you. Do not be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” (Isaiah 41:10, NLT)

Application: The next time you feel overwhelmed, remind yourself that you are not alone. Speak this truth out loud: “Jesus is with me in this storm.” Reach out to a trusted friend, pastor, or mentor and ask for prayer. Sometimes, just knowing that others are standing with you in faith can calm the storm inside.

Final Thought: Drop Anchor in God’s Promises

When storms arise, ships drop anchor to keep from being tossed about. Our anchor is God’s Word, His presence, and His unfailing love. No matter how fierce the storm, we can rest in the promise that He will never leave us nor forsake us. So take a deep breath, let go of fear, and trust the One who commands the wind and the waves. The storm will not last forever, but God’s faithfulness will.

What storm are you facing today? Drop your anchor in Christ, and trust He will bring you safely to shore.

There is hope; break free today.
